The first 16 TB monthly data center will be operational by the end of the year

Californian company Lonestar Data Holdings has raised $5 million in its first funding round for a one-month data center (data processing center) creation project. Also, the first Lonestar server will be sent to the Moon later this year.

In April 2022, Chris Stott, founder of Lonestar, commented on the idea:Data is the greatest currency humanity has ever created. On an increasingly fragile planet, data is very important to us. Properly storing them in our biosphere is already difficult. The moon is an ideal place for future secure data storage“.

It is assumed that at the initial stage the lunar data center will be used only for information storage – companies will be able to store their backups there. The server is expected to be sent to the Moon later this year. Its mass will be about 1 kg, its data storage volume is 16 TB. This device will receive power and communicate with Earth via the landing module. But Lonestar is already thinking about the future: the company plans to build a full-fledged, fully independent data center on the Moon in 2026.
