No, Bing, don’t leave me halfway again

I won’t try to hide it because I also think it shows when I read it. I really like the new BingI think Microsoft and OpenAI have done a great job, and I also see that their pace of work on improving the chatbot is diabolical, with remarkable news and advances every few days. Of course, we still have work to do, but at this rate we can hope that it won’t be too long before it reaches all users, and that it will do so in a more than satisfactory state.
Unlike ChatGPT, whose habit of making up answers when it doesn’t have the information you’re asking means I use it very little, a healthy habit of the new Bing by citing sources you will find it much more reliable and as a result I’ve been using it quite regularly, both because I’m very interested in trying it out and because it’s already helped clear up quite a few doubts that have cropped up in recent days.
The thing is, one thing leads to another, so what began as specific consultations developed into conversations of the most diverse kind, from science to music, from cinema to history, anything goes, and thanks to its habit… sorry, its feature of suggesting replies to your texts, I ended up foolishly enjoying conversations with the Bing chatbot. And it’s rare that he doesn’t suggest two or three sentences to continue chatting. The problem is, that…
Yes, indeed, a time limit on conversations. When the beta was open to early users, there was no restriction, but Microsoft quickly found that long conversations caused the chatbot to behave strangely. So they decided to cut their losses and set a maximum of five queries, which later increased to six and which, as we told you yesterday, increased to eight again.
i mean microsoft you acted reasonably in setting this limitand that the ability to adjust the tone of responses is also a very important step forward in this regard. In addition, according to Microsoft itself, it plans to increase this limit to ten interactions per conversation, which, according to the company, should more than cover the needs of the vast majority. The problem is they forgot to tell someone…
Indeed, as you can see in the picture, Bing doesn’t know that conversations are limited to a maximum number of messages, the point from which you need to clean up the conversation and start from scratch. Something that in turn, and as you can see in the screenshots of some of my conversations, caused the chatbot to ask me a question, generally a very well-chosen one, which unfortunately I can’t answer.
By using it, I know I’m not talking to a human, that we’re talking about an artificial intelligence that has no feelings and therefore doesn’t care in the slightest that I’m leaving the question hanging in the air. However, I have personally stayed on more than one occasion he wanted to be able to answer so I knew what he wanted to tell me. And yes, I know I could start a new conversation by trying to pick up where the last one left off, but frankly, that makes the conversation feel unnatural, which is one of Bing’s strengths.
Of course, I hope that Microsoft and OpenAI can solve the problems of Prometheus through long conversations, and that these limitations will eventually disappear, or at least rise to much higher levels than they are today. However, and until they do, probably it would be a good idea to make the chatbot aware of such restrictions and act accordingly, reporting them and closing conversations in a more natural way once all possible moves have been completed.
