The World Organization for Animal Health (WHO) said on Tuesday that France had reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in red foxes in an area northeast of Paris, as the spread of the virus in mammals is a global concern.
After three dead foxes were found in a reserve near where the gulls died, one of the mammals was collected and examined, the OMSA report said, citing French authorities.
The identified strain was H5N1which has spread worldwide in the past year and killed more than 200 million birds.
Last month, the World Health Organization described the avian influenza situation as “a matter of concern” given the recent rise in cases in birds and mammals and said he was reconsidering his assessment general risk in light of recent developments, including cases of human transmission of the virus in Cambodia.
