A hacker has stolen secret information from the PC manufacturer Acer. The nature of the stolen data is unknown
The hacker, operating under the name of Kernelware, shows his booty on the dark web. The entire database would contain 160GB of classified information, such as internal presentations, product keys, BIOS files, backend infrastructure, and documentation on PC manufacturers’ products. Kernelware threatens to sell this information to competitors unless Acer pays a ransom.
Acer has not yet officially commented, but a spokesman was able to assure The Register that no customer data was involved. The attacker(s) had gained unauthorized access to a repair company’s document server. The manufacturer is still investigating how exactly this information got in and what exactly was stolen.
In March 2021, Acer already had to deal with a data breach. Then the notorious Russian group REvil managed to break into the company. A few months later, the data from customers in India was also published.
Information on this new incident at Acer is scarce for the time being. We will continue to monitor this and update this article once more is known.
