Microsoft is on a rampage. The Redmond giant has shown that it is willing to do anything buy some of the biggest game development studios of the moment, and that paints a complicated picture for Sony. The Japanese company is aware of this, so we are not surprised that its CFO Hiroki Totoki confirmed investment of 5,100 million dollars buy new video game development studios.
This seems like a very wise move on Sony’s part, because ultimately an important part of a console’s success or failure is its exclusive games. Last year, Sony bought Bungie for $3,600 million, so if we add the $5,100 million it will have as a budget for new purchases, it comes to $8,700 million, which is impressive in itself, but contextualized with the numbers Microsoft crunches, it’s “insignificant”.
The purchase of Bethesda by Microsoft in 2020 was settled for a total of 7,500 million dollars, but if we focus on the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, we see that the amount of this operation is $68.7 billion. That Microsoft can afford to invest this money in this operation, and that Sony has invested $8.7 billion in various acquisitions, clearly shows us that the two companies are playing in very different leagues.
If you’re wondering what exactly that $5.1 billion could buy Sony, don’t worry, we won’t leave you wondering. One of the most important operations that Sony could do would be to buy Square Enix, which has a market capitalization of about $5 billion. The truth is that this would be an operation that would make a lot of sense, as Sony would acquire an interesting catalog of IPs, among which the Final Fantasy franchise undoubtedly stands out.
On the other hand, this information allows us to read something very interesting between the lines if we give it the proper context. When Microsoft bought Bethesda, Sony quickly considered buying Bungie. Now that Activision Blizzard’s purchase operation is still pending approval, the Japanese company has announced an investment of $5.1 billion. It seems that Sony would have already assumed that Microsoft would get away with itand that it is preparing a response with the purchase of new studies.
