A group of former Nicaraguan politicians expelled to the United States by President Daniel Ortega a month ago will soon appear before a subcommittee of the US House of Representatives to reveal their position and ask for more protection.

Former Nicaraguan presidential candidate Felix Maradiaga told EFE that hearings would take place on March 22 and that he and fellow candidate Juan Sebastian Chamorro, as well as his two wives, Berta Valle and Victoria Cardenas, would attend.

They were the ones who acted as representatives of “all prisoners” while they spent 20 months in prison until they were released on February 9 by the Ortega regime and unilaterally deported to the United States, stripping them of their citizenship.

Before a subcommittee of the lower house of the Western Hemisphere, opponents will demand that the protection given to them by the United States be extended, and they will ask that they work to release political prisoners who are still incarcerated.

“It will be a ‘hearing’ (audience) in general about Nicaragua, but we want to highlight the release of more than 35 prisoners who are still in Nicaragua, including Monsignor Rolando Alvarez,” who refused to board the plane, he said. .

Maradiaga said they have held meetings in recent weeks with congressmen and their aides to “advance the request to simplify the asylum procedure.”

He recalled that 222 people entered the United States with humanitarian clearance, which will allow them to live and work in the country for two years. However, this figure does not give access, for example, to medical care for the most vulnerable segments of the population, Maradiaga said.

As part of their goal of supporting the fight against the regime in exile, the opponent said that they are trying to run a global fight campaign and are working on organizing a European tour.

“We are working with some European governments so that despite the fact that we are stateless, they allow us to travel to explain what is happening in Nicaragua and mobilize some diplomatic action,” he said.
