Google has released the second Developer Preview for Android 14 with news and various features in the new version. A developer preview of an operating system is a version that developers must test, and in Google’s opinion, should not be used by users until the final version is released. According to the company, Android 14 beta will arrive in April.

The new developer version contains several new privacy and security features that allow users to grant restricted access to photos and videos to specific apps.

• Allow access to all photos: a complete library of all photos and videos on the device is available
• Select photos: only photos and videos selected by the user will be temporarily available through the MediaStore
• Do not allow: access to all photos and videos is prohibited

Credential Manager became a platform API in Android 14. It supports username and password, federated login (such as Google login), and passwords. According to Google, the goal is to “make it easier for users to sign in with APIs that retrieve and store credentials using user-configured credential providers.”

In addition to what was mentioned above, the new developer version of Android 14 brings other new changes such as new app security restrictions and better memory management.

• Safer Implicit Intents: For apps targeting Android 14, creating a mutable deferred intent with an implicit intent will throw an exception, preventing them from being used to run unexpected code paths (this improves device security). Applications must make the pending intent immutable, or make it explicit.
• Running an Activity in the BackgroundA: Android 14 gives foreground apps more control over the ability of the apps they interact with to trigger actions. Specifically, apps targeting Android 14 need to be granted privileges to run background activities when a PendingIntent is dispatched or a service is bound.

According to Google, Developer Preview 2 also includes optimizations to Android’s memory management system to improve resource usage when apps are running in the background.

Another novelty – advanced setting in regional settings, in system settings. Developers with the new version of Android 14 will be able to customize the temperature unit, the number system, that is, the first day of the week (Sunday / Monday), information that will be transmitted to the applications they use. Google stresses that a developer preview should preferably be tested by developers. The first beta version of Android 14 should arrive by the end of April.
