WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow you to create a group with an end date. After that, the group will disappear automatically.

Creating WhatsApp groups is often useful if, for example, you are temporarily traveling with a group or are temporarily putting together a team at work. All communication then takes place centrally via the chat group. When it’s all over, the group will remain in your chat history.

Luckily, these days one can conveniently exit such a group without notifying the rest, but it remains an annoying extra step that one shouldn’t forget to keep track of.

According to WaBetaInfo, WhatsApp owner Meta is working on a timer that can be set when creating a group as an admin. The feature is currently being tested on iOS with a select group of beta testers. You can set an expiration date to a day, a week, or your own deadline. If you as an administrator want to keep a group active for a longer period of time, you can change or delete the selected period at any time.

It is not yet clear if and when the new function will be rolled out to the general public.

Meanwhile, Meta is also working on many other features within WhatsApp. For example, there is a complete newsletter module and work is being done on a tool that converts audio messages into text. Earlier this year, WhatsApp was rumored to be working on a feature to send full-resolution photos, but they’re keeping quiet about that for now.
