Border Patrol agents in California foiled an alleged case of child smuggling when they pulled over a driver with a child who he claimed didn’t know who he was or where he was going.
In a statement Customs and Border Guard (CBP) explained that agents assigned to the San Clemente Border Patrol checkpoint discovered the child during a routine check.
He Driver who was traveling alone with a child, arrived at the screening point at dawn last Friday.
The man was sent for a second check, where he could neither identify the baby nor show any documents for the child.
The suspect claimed to have taken Baby in Otay Mesa, California, a border town between California and Mexico, and didn’t know the boy’s name or where he was taking him.
The San Clemente inspection post is located on Highway 5, which connects southern California border with Los Angeles and upstate.
The case was referred to the Office of Homeland Security Investigation (HSI).
Aaron M. Heitke, Head border patrol sector of San Diego, said in a statement that “thanks to the vigilance of our agents, we were able to prevent this the baby was sold and potentially exploitable.
CBP urged the public to report suspicious activity in a statement human trafficking.
