Chinese President Xi Jinping consolidated his power after the National People’s Assembly (ANP, equivalent to the Legislative Assembly) appointed him to a third five-year presidential term (2023-2028), unprecedented among his predecessors.

The PNA plenary meeting today ratified the permanent post of Xi, also general secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China (CCP), after the body approved a constitutional amendment in 2018 to remove the two-year limit on consecutive five-year terms for Chinese presidents.

The 2,952 deputies who were present in the Assembly, in which there is very rarely opposition to the measures presented, approved the continuation Xi as head of state unanimously.

The plenary meeting, held in the Great Hall of the People on Tiananmen Square, also approved the appointment of Han Zheng as vice president and Zhao Leji as chairman of the PNA Standing Committee, which corresponds to the position of the head of the Legislative Assembly.

After the vote, Xi, Han, and Zhao swore an oath to the Chinese Constitution.

Similarly, MPs also unanimously gave the green light to Xi’s third term as chairman of the Central Military Commission, equivalent to heading an Asian country’s armed forces.

Last October, Xi confirmed his position as general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party for a third term, unprecedented among his immediate predecessors.

Thus, the president’s control over the three branches of power: the state, PCCh and the army is being strengthened.
