The hacker claims that Acronis, as a security provider, did not commission its own store and wanted to humiliate the company with the data breach.
The same hacker who was behind Acer’s major data breach earlier this month has also targeted security vendor Acronis. In total, the hacker, referred to as kernelware, disclosed 12.2 GB of data on Breached Forums (PDF source).
Kernelware razes Acronis to the ground in its forum post. The hacker was bored and apparently had no trouble getting in. He speaks of “dogshit security”, which is difficult to reconcile with a security company like Acronis.
The CISO of the Swiss cybersecurity company confirms the hack on LinkedIn. Then one quickly followed tweet that Acronis products were not affected.
Since the data was published on Breached Forums, the company has promptly launched an investigation. The hacker was able to collect credentials of a specific customer authorized to upload diagnostic data to Acronis support department.
The account user has since been notified and access has been removed to resolve the issue, Acronis told The Register. “We continue to investigate and will provide updates as new information comes to light.”
