Turkey’s earthquake death toll has risen to nearly 48,000.

Turkish authorities today raised the death toll from the February 6 earthquakes and their aftershocks to almost 48,000, nearly 2,000 more than the latest official figure.

“To date, the registry office recorded the death of 47,932 people, of which 6,265 are foreign citizens,” Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told reporters.

The figure increases the balance of last week by almost two thousand, 46,104 deaths, but introduces a nuance, specifying that these are only the already identified corpses.

“At the moment, 1,619 people are trying to identify either by DNA or fingerprints. In addition, in total, the police received 264 requests (to search for missing persons),” Soylu added. Urban Development Minister Murat Kurum said registration of damaged buildings had already been completed in five of the eleven affected provinces.

Kurum noticed that 96.7% of the destroyed buildings were built before 1999, the year in which new regulations were introduced requiring anti-seismic measures in construction.

Two strong earthquakes in Turkey on February 6 caused some $34.2 billion in direct physical damage, but the total reconstruction and recovery costs facing the country could double, reports The World Bank.

Humberto Lopez, the World Bank’s director for Turkey, told the press that the earthquakes would also reduce Turkey’s expected gross domestic product growth by at least half a percentage point, which will be between 3.5% and 4% in 2023.

Bjerde noted that Turkey’s initial estimate of $34.2 billion in rapid damage is equivalent to about 4% of its economic output in 2021, but does not include indirect or secondary impacts on its economic growth, as well as the most recent earthquake, which occurred a week ago.

“Our experience tells us that renovation needs can become two to three times higher to the alleged direct physical damage,” he said.
