The modernized fifth-generation fighter F-35 Lightning II Block 4 will receive new means of radio-electronic warfare (EW), which will become the main feature of the improved aircraft. This was announced by General Mark Kelly, head of the US Air Force Combat Aviation Command, The Drive reports.
“Most of what we need the F-35 for depends on its Block 4 electronic warfare capabilities.”Kelly said at the Air Force and Space Forces Association symposium.
It was noted that the integration of the updated Block 4 components will depend on the Technology Refresh-3 initiative, which aims to modernize the aircraft’s central processor, memory unit and avionics. The updated components are said to provide 25 times more computing power than the Technology Refresh-2 system.
As the publication wrote, as part of the Block 4 update, the fighter will receive a new AN/APG-85 radar with active phased antenna arrays. The full list of changes is not yet known. Source
