More than 100 arrested for poisoning girls in Iranian schools

Iranian Interior Ministry confirmed arrest of more than 100 people connected with the poisoning of students of several schools in the countryan action that Tehran considers to be a conspiracy orchestrated by “enemy” countries.

The agency gave details of the investigation days after announcing that several people had been arrested for their alleged involvement in the events, without providing information on the numbers.

He explained that among those arrested there are cases people who acted “out of harm” with the “purpose of closing classes”as well as those detained “in hostile motives”, whose purpose was “to sow terror among the people and students, to sow skepticism towards the system”, according to the news agency IRNA.

Fewer ‘incidents’, government says

“These criminals, including the identification of their possible connection with terrorist organizations (…), are being investigated,” the ministry said in a statement.

The authorities wanted to calm the situation, stressing that “fortunately, from the middle of last week until today the number of incidents in schools has decreased significantly.”

In Iran, women’s education has been unquestioned in the Islamic Republic’s 43 years, and some parents have linked the poisonings to protests with a strong feminist tinge in recent months that have subsided after heavy state crackdown.

School and college students participated in these protests, removing their veils, shouting “woman, life, freedom” and making contemptuous gestures at portraits of Khamenei and the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

UN calls for investigation into mysterious poisonings of girls in Iranian schools

On Friday, the UN Human Rights Office expressed concern over reports of mysterious gassings at girls’ schools in various Iranian cities and called for a transparent investigation.

“We are very concerned that girls may become victims of deliberate attacks, and although the authorities have already assured that they are investigating incidents, we call for such investigations to be transparent and their results made public,” a spokeswoman for the organization said. at a press conference in Raveena Shamdasani’s office.

He also reiterated High Commissioner Volker Turk’s condemnation of “all forms of violence against women and girls” to then ask the Iranian authorities “to introduce effective legislation to prevent this kind of violent and discriminatory action.”
