“Today, the European Union, the United States, and several international partners have proposed a Statement on the Future of the Internet, which sets out the vision and principles for a reliable Internet. The partners support that the Future Internet be open, free, global, interoperable, reliable and secure. They reaffirmed their commitment to protecting and respecting human rights online and in the digital world.”

Participants in the declaration stressed that the free internet should strengthen fundamental democratic principles, fundamental freedoms and human rights as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. All partners share the belief that the Internet should act as a single, decentralized “network of networks” where digital technologies will be used indiscriminately among people, ensuring competitiveness of online platforms and fair competition among business representatives.

Participants in the declaration strongly condemned attempts by authoritarian regimes to suppress Internet freedom, digital tools to violate human rights, cyber attacks, dissemination of illegal content, disinformation. At the same time, they agreed that digital technologies have the potential to promote interconnection, democracy, peace and the rule of law.

The Declaration has been supported by 60 partners to date, but the document is also open to other countries that are ready to defend the open global Internet that will be a driving force for economic and social development around the world.

The declaration and its directives are not binding legal documents. It will also be used as a reference point for public authorities and citizens, business and public institutions.

The first consultation working meeting on the Statement on the Future of the Internet will be held next month. In the summer of 2022, a large-scale event is expected to be held with the participation of all stakeholders to identify further actions to implement the principles outlined in the Declaration on a Free and Safe Global Internet.
