Russian cybercriminals say they stole “tens of gigabytes” of data from the yet to be released game STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl and are now blackmailing developers into “rethinking their stance” towards Russians and Belarusians.
This has been reported by Ukrinform with reference to the disclosure. GSC Game World.
The developers have confirmed that the account of one of the company’s employees was hacked, but they will not succumb to blackmail.
Fans are urged not to view or distribute the merged files because “old and development materials may diminish the impression of the final idea.” Instead, they recommend waiting for the official release.
The company also stated that this is “far from the first attempt” to hack and leak its data – the attacks have been going on for over a year.
Earlier, a group from a Russian social network allegedly gained access to private channels in mid-2019 and leaked some data of the first version of the game. Visual materials are already distributed on the Russian social network “Vkontakte” and on the forums.
The hackers demand to “rethink the attitude towards players from Belarus and Russia”, refuse to “politicize” and abandon the Russian voice-over, which the game developers decided to abandon in the summer of 2022.
The Russians claim to have the entire scenario, concept design, screenshots and map images of STALKER 2, and the developers are threatening to release them all if they don’t agree to their terms.
