Facebook’s parent company said it would stop showing news content to Canadians if the country’s parliament passed the proposed law.

According to the Ukrinform correspondent, Reuters writes about it.

It was noted that the government’s “Online News” bill, submitted to parliament last year, required platforms such as Meta and Alphabet to enter into commercial deals and pay publishers for their content.

“A legal framework that requires us to pay for links or content that we do not host and is not a reason for most people to use our platform is not sustainable or enforceable,” a Meta spokesperson said.

Reuters recalls that the Google platform, subject to the proposed rules, began testing limited censorship of news content in Canada last month in response to the bill.

“Canadian media has asked the government to tighten restrictions on tech companies so the industry can recover from financial losses in recent years, when tech giants like Google and Meta have consistently taken a larger share of the ad market,” the article states.

Canadian Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez, who introduced the bill, criticized Facebook for taking such a radical stance.

“We just ask Facebook to come to an honest agreement with news organizations about the revenue of their business. This is where tech giants would rather remove news than pay honestly to share it.[hayal kırıklığı yaratan]It’s part of a trend,” said Rodriguez.

We’ll remind you: On March 11, it was learned that Facebook Meta’s parent company was considering the possibility of creating a new, separate platform for text updates that could replace Twitter.
