Most CIOs expect to receive more funding in 2023. That’s what the research shows. Respondents report that the increased budget comes with additional expectations, so they ultimately have to do more with less.
93 percent of CIOs expect to have a higher budget in 2023. This is the conclusion reached by the consulting company OneSoftware based on a survey of 600 IT managers, not here, but in the USA and Great Britain. The survey also found that the extra budget doesn’t mean CIOs have more breathing room. On the contrary: Expectations are higher, with 83 percent of those surveyed believing that they need to achieve more with relatively fewer resources.
Legacy and cloud have the biggest negative impact on the budget. Cloud costs are higher than necessary for many companies. 38 percent of those surveyed named migration to the cloud too quickly as the main reason. Enterprises would have rushed to the cloud in response to the lockdowns during the pandemic without workloads being optimized for it. Another 38 percent say they were suffocated by the price of the cloud, which was significantly higher than expected.
Inheritance also takes its toll. 51 percent of the CIOs surveyed see the elimination of the complexity of legacy issues as one of the three greatest challenges of the present.
In general, CIOs want more control over their costs. 45 percent said more cost transparency would help them get more value from cloud investments. This in turn would create more management support.
92 percent plan to modernize applications despite budget pressures. There are significant savings to be made in the long term by migrating applications from legacy to cloud native. It’s not just about more efficient use of the cloud itself, but also about the associated license costs.
The survey reflects a clear trend that organizations are seeing that the cloud is not the ultimate solution. The cloud environment offers great value for many flexible workloads, but for stable applications that require large amounts of storage space, the cloud guarantees a high bill. Running the right workloads in the right place can help use the available budget more efficiently.
