From now on, all government services connected to Belnet can more conveniently subscribe to Telnet for WAN connectivity.
Belnet is the national research and education network that provides specific IT services and connectivity for federal and local governments, universities, colleges and research institutions. The framework contract with Telenet runs for five years and has a maximum value of 73 million euros.
Ultimately, Telenet will connect up to 1,200 potential physical locations where federal agencies are located to each other and to the Belnet network. First and foremost, the telecommunications provider provides the (mutual) connectivity of the state institutions via a private network. To do this, Telenet uses its own fiber optic network and partner networks.
With the new framework contract, institutions no longer need to award separate public contracts to develop and manage their networks.
economies of scale and savings
Geert Degezelle, Executive Vice President at Telenet Business: “This is a major project in which we will connect up to 1,200 sites – geographically spread across the country. We have the knowledge and experience to fully unburden federal agencies with their WAN connectivity.”
Dirk Haex, Acting Managing Director of Belnet: “The framework agreement with Telenet is part of Belnet’s new connectivity strategy. For the past two years, Belnet has been searching a government contract for a partner that can connect federal sites to our network as efficiently as possible.”
Thomas Dermine, State Secretary for Science Policy, is satisfied with the cooperation and sees the opportunity to realize significant savings through synergies and economies of scale.
