Meta is working on a decentralized social network to compete with Twitter

Mastodon, Twitter’s decentralized text-based social network, is enjoying fast-growing popularity. It’s only a matter of time before other social media giants jump on board. Meta is already working on its own version.

According to a report by Moneycontrol, the development project is codenamed P92 and allows users to log in using their Instagram credentials. Meta confirmed that it is developing the project but did not provide details on a release schedule.

“We are investigating a self-contained decentralized social network for sharing text updates,” said a spokesman for Meta. “We believe there is an opportunity for a separate space for creators and public figures to share updates about their interests.”

Meta uses the same platform as Twitter

As the product description shows, the decentralized social network Meta will start with ActivityPub. This is the same technology that Twitter’s Mastodon is built on.

ActivityPub is an open, decentralized social networking protocol that allows the creation of individual servers or instances. Each of these servers can have their own set of rules and themes that users can participate in while still being connected to the larger social network called Fediverse.

It looks like Meta’s decentralized network will get similar features to Twitter, including touchable links, a user bio, a username, and verification badges. Users will also be able to follow, like and share text, images and videos with other users.

Since the network is built on top of ActivityPub, users on the meta platform can also send and receive messages from users on Mastodon. In addition to Twitter and Meta, other companies have integrated ActivityPub into their platforms, including Tumblr, Flipboard, and Flickr.

Response to Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover

The rise of decentralized social networks is accompanied by the controversial takeover of Twitter by billionaire Elon Musk. As a result, Mastodon saw a significant increase in active users between November and October: the number went from 300,000 to 2.5 million. While not a decentralized network, Tumblr also boomed during this time, growing from 47,000 to 92,000 installs.
