Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s government is preparing one of the so-called constitutional amendment proposals to try reduce the influence of the armed forces in Brazilian politics, exacerbated during the last four years of former President Jair Bolsonaro’s rule, with most of the soldiers taking up important posts.

The proposal, created in the portfolio of the Ministry of Defense, already has the first draft, the newspaper reports. “Oh Globe. At the same time, those soldiers who intend to run in elections or take over the mandate of the ministry, for example, must withdraw from the Armed Forces or go to the reserve.

Thus, those soldiers who wish participate in elections or hold high positions in government they must retire permanently, and those with at least 35 years of service must retire before being nominated or holding any position.

At present, the military they can return to their military activities after the completion of the electoral processes in case of no win. According to the Constitution, servicemen with more than ten years of service are retired if they are elected in elections.

The proposal, which is already known to the three commanders of the armed forces, also aims to change one of the articles of the constitution, which, according to the government’s allies, has been misinterpreted by Bolsonaro’s supporters. The question under consideration states that the military, “under the supreme direction of the president” must guarantee “protection of the Motherland”

In many cases, Bolsonaro’s supporters have used this argument to mislead deterrent force of the armed forcesresulting in demands for the dissolution of Congress, the Supreme Court, or the non-recognition of the election results, as seen in the last election.
