US strengthens its position as the world’s leading arms exporter

The United States positions itself as world’s leading arms exporter to distance themselves from Russia, which was noticed weighed down by sanctions invasion of Ukraine, while arms imports to Europe are skyrocketing, according to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

“Although the supply of arms has declined globally, those destined for Europe have increased significantly due to tensions between Russia and most other European states,” said Simon Wezeman, SIPRI senior researcher for the arms transfer program.

In this sense, he assured that the European states strive to import weapons “faster”. For its part, the United States has increased its distance from Russia and established itself as the world’s leading arms exporter after Russia, which has been hit by global sanctions.

In particular, according to the report, import weapons by European states increased by 47 percent between the periods 2013-2017 and 2018-2022, while the global level of international arms transfers decreased by 5.1 percent.

As for the United States, North American giant increased exports by 14 percent during the periods mentioned above, representing 40 percent of world exports weapons between 2018 and 2022. For its part, Russian arms exports have fallen by 31 percent.

This This also affected the recipients of Russian weapons, which decreased from ten to eight in the aforementioned periods. Thus, exports to India fell by 37 percent, while exports to the other seven countries fell by an average of 59 percent. However, China stands out with a growth of 39 percent and Egypt with a growth of 44 percent.

He also emphasizes increase in French arms exports, with a 44 percent increase between 2013-17 and 2018-2022, with the majority in Asia, Oceania and the Middle East. In this sense, it is noteworthy that France has displaced the United States as the second largest arms supplier to India after Russia.

“France is gaining an increasing share of the global arms market as Russian arms exports are declining, as seen in India, for example,” Wesemann said, adding that This trend is “likely” to continue.

Ukrainian war and tensions with China

The report also highlights that European NATO countries increased arms imports by 65 percent in an attempt to beef up its arsenals in response to war tensions in Ukraine, which by 2022 has become the third largest arms importer after Qatar and India.

China’s arms imports rose by 4.1%, with most of the imports coming from Russia. Despite this, the largest increase in East Asia came from South Korea (up 61 percent) and Japan (up 171 percent), US allies. Similarly, Australia increased its imports by 23 percent.

“Growing perception of threats from China and North Korea This spurred increased demand for weapons imports from Japan, South Korea and Australia, especially for long-range weapons,” Weseman explained.
