Canada plans to launch its own satellite into orbit that will track dangerous space junk.

Ukrinform reported that this was announced by the Ministry of Defense.

“Canada has signed a contract worth $15.8 million for the implementation of the Redwing microsatellite project in space. As part of this project, the Department of Defense will monitor objects moving around the Earth with the help of a new durable satellite that will be developed, assembled and maintained in Canada. invests in research and development.”

It was noted that the new satellite will help “reduce future risks to Canada’s space infrastructure from space debris or human interference.” By tracking objects in tight orbits, Redwing will be able to record and transmit data from any position it has, as well as photograph nearby space objects and “track space objects making unexpected maneuvers.”

Canadian company Magellan Aerospace will be responsible for the implementation of the project. “The development phase is expected to be completed in the fall of 2024, and the microsatellite will be assembled and tested by 2026. The launch is scheduled for the end of 2027,” he said.

As Ukrinform reports, the SpaceX Crew-5 astronaut mission for NASA returned to Earth from the International Space Station after more than five months in space.
