UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday called for dialogue and containment between Russia and the US following an incident between two Russian fighter jets and a US drone in the Black Sea, near the battlefield in Ukraine.
The episode that caused tension between the two countries has now led to a race against time to see who finds the remains of the device.
Asked about this, Guterres spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the UN chief called for dialogue and “avoid any escalation.”
In this sense, Dujarric hoped that communication between the two sides would continue and steps would be taken to reduce tensions.
The spokesman made it clear that the UN does not have first-hand information about the incident, nor the capacity or authority to investigate what happened in the Black Sea.
While the US said a Russian fighter jet brushed the propeller of their drone and caused it to shoot it down, the Russian Defense Ministry denied any contact between its Su-27 fighters and the drone in the neutral waters of the Black Sea.
