This Tuesday (14), fifth stage Operation 404the purpose of which fight online piracy as part of international mobilization coordinated Ministry of Justice and Public Security (IWSP), through National Secretariat of Public Safety (Senasp). The civilian police of eight states participated in the action, conducting investigations and inspections. The goal is to remove audio and video content such as games and music, block and suspend illegal streaming websites and apps, de-index content in search engines, and remove social media profiles and pages.

Operation 404 achieved significant results in its 5th phase, held on Tuesday (14). Eleven people were arrested in different regions of the country: four in Sao Paulo, two in Parana, one in Bahia and four in Minas Gerais. The actions of the civilian police of the eight states involved in the operation led to in the removal of 199 illegal streaming and gaming sites, as well as 63 music applications. In addition, 128 domains and six messaging app channels were blocked. These channels had over four thousand subscribers and were used to distribute officially unreleased music.

Alessandro Barreto, coordinator of the MJSP Cyber ​​Operations Lab (Ciberlab), indicated that some of these channels collect user information that is used for online fraud: “Some collect user data that they think they download for free, but provide information that is even used for online scams.“

The fight to protect intellectual property

The fifth phase of Operation 404 aims to improve the security of the intellectual property environment in Brazil.

“Piracy causes damage to our country in the amount of 15 billion reais a year with tax cuts of 2 billion reais a year, and these are, of course, resources that are no longer invested in culture, in audiovisual media. This is a result that sometimes seems interesting to the consumer and those who use piracy, but piracy is a crime and the Brazilian state will fight it hard.“, stressed National Secretary of Public Security Tadeu Alencar at a press conference held at the MJSP Headquarters in Brasilia.

The complex operation was carried out with the cooperation of several authorities and organizations, including the Embassy of the United Kingdom in Brazil, through the police department for combating intellectual property crimes, the National Institute for the Protection of Competition and Intellectual Property of Peru, the Brazilian Association of Television by Subscription. (ABTA), MPA Latin America, Alianza, an organization dedicated to combating piracy in Latin America, and the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the US trade association for the video game industry. Since its inception in 2019, Operation 404 has delivered significant results. 1,974 websites and 783 apps were blocked, and 128 search warrants and 96 search and seizure warrants were executed.
