According to the New Zealand newspaper The New Zealand Herald, the earthquake occurred about a thousand kilometers from the northern island of the country.
The Kermadec Islands, lying between New Zealand and Tonga, are uninhabited, except for the staff of the permanent base on Raoul Island, where there is a meteorological and radio station.
New Zealand lies on a fault line between the Pacific and Oceanic tectonic plates.
About 14 thousand earthquakes are registered annually, of which 100 to 150 have sufficient power for perception. (Europe Press and EFE)
