For the first time, scientists from the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have obtained direct evidence of volcanic activity on the planet Venus.

This was reported by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), as reported by Ukrinform.

The scientists made this discovery after examining archival radar images of Venus taken by NASA’s Magellan spacecraft more than 30 years ago. The images show the volcanic vent changing shape and growing significantly in less than a year.

Scientists study active volcanoes to understand how a planet’s interior can shape its crust, drive its evolution, and affect its habitability. One of NASA’s new Venus missions, called VERITAS, scheduled to launch within a decade, will do just that.

The orbiter will probe Venus from the surface to the core to understand how a rocky planet roughly the same size as Earth takes a very different path, becoming a world covered with volcanic plains and deformed terrain hidden under a thick, hot, toxic atmosphere.

“NASA’s choice of the VERITAS mission inspired me to search for recent volcanic activity in Magellan data. I wasn’t really expecting much success, but after about 200 hours of manually comparing images from different Magellanic orbits, I found the same area taken eight months apart and the results of the eruption.” I’ve seen two images of it that show distinct geological changes,” said Dr. John, a professor at the University of Alaska and a member of the VERITAS research team who led the archival data search.

As reported by Ukrinform, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) chose Firefly Aerospace to transport several payloads to the far side of the Moon, including a satellite.
