Google Glass has had a bumpy road. After a rapid rise in commercial success, the product crashed immediately. The consumer variant was withdrawn from the market in 2015, but the search giant remained committed to the companies.
After an update in 2021 to make Google Glass compatible with Google Workspace, it has now been decided to pull the plug entirely. This is noticeable because the Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 is only three years old. At launch, the search giant saw a bright future in Google Glass for frontline workers, who can virtually stream their image to other attendees to collaborate in real time, solve problems, or train attendees.
The official Google Glass support page has now announced that sales of the data glasses have been discontinued since March 15, 2023 and that existing customers will receive support until September 15. Google emphasizes that the glasses will no longer receive software updates. It’s just general support until September.
After the deadline, Google Glass will continue to work, according to the search giant. Third-party developers can still update their applications to continue using business applications. Only the “Meet on Glass” app is no longer guaranteed to work after September 15, 2023. This application allows you to make video calls within Google Workspace using Google Meet.
The scrapping of the Google Glass project is another tombstone in the famous Google graveyard. The timing is also unfortunate after the network showed additional engagement with a new Google Glass companion app on the search giant’s Pixel phones late last year. In the middle of the year, during the Google I/O, it showed a live AR translation function on the glasses.
Anyone who invested $999 in a Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 back then knows that the product is gradually being sent to the eternal hunting grounds. You can still use the glasses, but it seems only logical to us that now that Google is officially saying goodbye to the product, all external support is no longer available.
