Amazon is preparing to launch satellite internet to compete with Elon Musk’s Starlink

e-commerce giant Amazon announced on Tuesday the release of the 14th ultra-compact terminal for connecting users to a constellation of low-orbit satellites as part of a satellite internet service that will compete with starlinkfrom SpaceX V Elon Musk. Service called “Project Kuiper“, will feature a variety of antenna models that promise simplified, low-cost, high-performance networking solutions to democratize access.

The company has set itself the most ambitious goal of developing terminals costing less than $500 (about R$2,627 in direct conversion), and this goal was achieved by program engineers in 2020. A standard device (shown in the photo cover), which was based on a company estimate of $500, should be less than $400 (2101 real) per unit.

Along with low-cost devices, Amazon has released two more versions of the antenna: a more compact, classified as portable, 45 square centimeters, weighing approximately 450 grams, but with a speed limit of 100 Mbps. ; the other will be a more advanced terminal capable of delivering 1 Gbps, designed for large companies and government needs.

Democratization of the Internet combined with quality service

Vice President of Technology, Project Kuiper, Rajiv badyal, said that the goal, in addition to democratizing the Internet, is also to make it efficient, with quality and reliable service. “From day one, every technology and business decision we made has been focused on what will provide the best experience for different customers around the world, and our range of client terminals reflects that choice,” he said.

Amazon’s initial idea is to launch the constellation in the first half of 2024 to serve “tens of millions of customers” in the future. The first two satellite prototypes are expected to be launched into orbit in May 2023.
