The UK announced on Thursday that will ban TikTok on public phones effective immediately, a move that follows other Western countries that have banned the Chinese-owned video app for security reasons.
“The security of sensitive government information must come first, which is why we are banning this app from government devices today. Using Other Applications to Extract Data will be under considerationThis was stated by Cabinet Minister Oliver Dowden.
TikTok is coming under increasing scrutiny due to concerns that app users’ data owned by ByteDance company based in Beijing.could end up in the hands of the Chinese government, undermining Western security interests.
The British government has asked the National Cybersecurity Center to look into possible public data vulnerability to social media applications and the risks associated with accessing and using confidential information.
USA, Canada, Belgium and the European Commission has already banned the app on official devices.
TikTok said it was disappointed with this decision and has already begun to accept additional data protection measures European users.
“We believe that these bans were based on fundamental misconceptions and is driven by wider geopolitics in which TikTok and our millions of users in the UK play no part,” a TikTok spokesperson said.
“We remain committed to working with the government to resolve any issues, but we must judge by facts and treated the same way as our competitors.”
Dowden explained to Parliament that from now on, government devices will only be able to access third-party apps from a pre-approved list.
He added that the TikTok ban does not apply to the personal devices of government employees or ministers, and that there will be limited exemptions in cases where TikTok is required on government devices for work purposes.
