As of March 15, Google stop selling its iconic smart glasses, Augmented Reality Glass, for businesses. In addition, the technology company also confirmed that it will only support the device until September 15 this year. The decision was officially announced on the company’s website, where the announcement was accompanied by a thank you to partners and a celebration of more than a decade of innovation.

ABOUT Augmented Reality Glass was launched in 2013 as a revolutionary product that allowed users to access real-time information through an augmented reality interface. Google has turned the failed Google Glass into a solution for business and industrial customers to keep workers connected hands-free.

The Glass Enterprise Edition line received a second-generation upgrade in 2019 built on the Snapdragon XR1 platform to better withstand the rigors of desktop environments. The glasses have a larger screen, foldable design and a faster processor.

Glasses will continue to work with third-party developers

The Google Glass line will soon be discontinued, but existing headsets will continue to work as usual and third-party developers will still be able to update their apps. However, the Meet on the Glass app is not guaranteed after the September 15th deadline. Interestingly, the platform recently received an early access program to test integration with Google Pixel phones through a new companion app, including integration with common Google apps and services such as Google Tasks, Google Translate, and Google Camera.

Meanwhile, Google continues to work on Android-based augmented reality headsets, including “smart ring” controls similar to those used by Focals by North (a company acquired by Google). At its annual I/O conference last May, the company showcased the live transcription and translation feature on AR smart glasses, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to augmented reality technology.
