Advanced devices are becoming more and more popular. Almost every day, a new company releases its own foldable smartphone. However, these devices have one major drawback: their flexible OLED screens are very fragile and can be easily damaged with minimal pressure. To solve this problem, Apple is developing a protective system specifically for iPhone and iPad folding screens that prevents damage in the event of a fall. Details are hereā¦
Apple develops innovative solution to protect foldable iPhone/iPad screen
Apple recently filed a patent application with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) entitled “Methods of Screen Protection Using Self-Retracting Display Device and Drop Detection.” The idea is to use sensors on devices with foldable or movable screens to detect if they have fallen. If the device falls, it can cover or partially retract the screen to prevent the sensitive screen from hitting the ground.
The patent filing says that even folding the screen at an angle of less than 180 degrees can help protect it. This is because the edges of the device hit the ground, not the screen first. The extended screen can automatically retract the screen if the device falls too fast. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who often makes accurate predictions about Apple products, believes a foldable iPad could be launched in 2025.
But sometimes even the best experts can be wrong. In 2021, Kuo predicted that the foldable iPhone will hit the market in 2023 and will sell 20 million units. Kuo’s latest guess is that the foldable iPad could feature a carbon fiber kickstand. This allows users to position the device at the best angle to view content on the screen without holding it. While these ideas are interesting, it’s worth remembering that these are just patent applications and speculation at this point. But it’s clear that Apple is working hard to find ways to protect complex devices’ screens from damage in the event of a drop.
