Baidu, one of the largest search companies in China, has launched a new version of the ERNIE (Enhanced Representation Through Knowledge Integration) bot in response to the OpenAI

Baidu, one of the largest search companies in China, has launched a new version of the ERNIE (Enhanced Representation Through Knowledge Integration) bot in response to the OpenAI ChatGPT service.. The ERNIE bot has been developed by the company for the past 10 years and was first released in 2019.

During a press event to launch a new AI tool, Baidu CEO Robin Li stated that the latest version of ERNIE Bot has features close to GPT-4the latest iteration of the excellent OpenAI language model that was released a few days ago.

The chatbot provided by Baidu appears to have a knowledge graph with roughly 550 billion facts, but this data is mainly focused on the Chinese market. So while it may list Chinese languages, it may not have many answers to questions about certain topics outside of the region.

Among the big differences from ChatGPT is the ability of ERNIE Bot to respond to users with sound. As if all that wasn’t enough, this voice message can be in several different Chinese dialects, in addition to being able to create images and videos from text and Chinese.

The tool performed well in tests

In a demonstration held at the event, the chatbot was able to summarize a Chinese science fiction novel and suggest how to continue the story if the book were to be expanded. In addition, the chatbot was able to name the actors of the film adaptation of the book, compare their heights and determine which of them is taller.

In another demo, a chatbot could suggest names for a high-tech services company targeting small and medium businesses, write slogans for it, and create a newsletter with a certain number of words.

Robin Lee said that 650 companies have already applied to use the ERNIE Bot technology, but acknowledged that it is not ready for a public debut. Baidu only disclosed it earlier due to market demand driven by the rapid rise in popularity of ChatGPT.

Continuation after commercial

So far, the Chinese tech giant is only granting access to those who have received invitations, although other companies may apply to be able to embed the chatbot into their products via Baidu’s cloud platform.
