The thing I miss most about Android when I switch to iOS. And now it’s reference on Android

0

Since my debut Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V, a lot has happened not only on Android, but also in the smartphone world. Since that day, countless cell phones have passed through my hands. Many Androids and yes, many iPhones too. AND Of all the virtues of Android, I’ve missed one that isn’t even software-only.. At least not basic.

This is already about the legendary notification LEDs. That little light, usually on the top of the mobile, helped me find out/us if we had any pending notifications without unlocking the mobile. Something similar to the information we can have today with ‘Always On Display’ but without much battery drain. This item is not only for iPhone, but also slowly disappearing from Android.

Green WhatsApp. orange calls

Notification LED on

If you haven’t experienced or remember a time when Android phones with LED notifications were plentiful, I remember this very customizable. Almost always.

And as with many Android options right now, a little depends on the manufacturer. In some cases we found these options in the settings, other times in the apps in question, and in many other cases we had to download a third-party app. In its most complete form, it was great to be able to customize it to the fullest.

I remember how can of course choose the color for each application within a limit. White light, orange light, green light, blue light, violet light… Some supported many types of lights and are as configurable as they support. Choosing green for WhatsApp was the most obvious, but I have already said that this is not possible on all mobile phones.

The main benefit this luminous element offers is, Being able to find out if we have received notifications without touching the mobile phone. In fact, he couldn’t even be near and in absolute silence. The LED was visible and we already knew what we were getting when we saw it.

He parted in the most painful way: little by little and without saying goodbye.

The passage of time has brought us improvements in cameras, screens, batteries… in everything. But, It’s not good to lose small details like this. It is clear that far from exaggeration, it is not a fundamental element, but it is best to continue to make room for it.

“Screen always on” function replaces notification LED

The notification LED left without saying goodbye and of course no explanation to justify its departure. Urban legends say that its elimination is mainly due to optimizing the space in the front of mobile phones, and therefore to make the screen stand out more. Only the camera or speaker is present, the first located at the top of the panel and the second sometimes at the bottom.

Despite everything, I believe saving. Unfortunately, I don’t have figures on how much adding a small LED of this kind could cost the manufacturer, but in the end, I understand that the potential savings a company assumes, no matter how small, are welcome. And I also understand that nor do we pounce on them en masse to ask them to return.. Even though most of us cry for him in private.

It is not completely dead, but its presence in current mobile phones is very small.

OPPO Reno7 Pro

The vast majority of Android smartphones today have ignored this function. In contrast, they implement similar options with the rear camera flash, or rely on it to inform visually on the always-on display. Even though it’s the most normal thing they couldn’t even find a replacement for him.

Right now only a few manufacturers continue to maintain this and not in all their series. One of the last examples we have in the Xiaomi Mi 10T Pro is precisely the Chinese manufacturer that continues to bet the most on it, but not constantly and is absent in its latest smartphones.

Manufacturers like Nothing, OPPO and Realme are trying to modernize it. And your suggestions are welcome.

Instead, we have what can be called the modern successor to the notification LED. forks Integrate LEDs behind the terminal accepting configurations such as those offered by LED at the time. One of the first examples was the OPPO Reno 7 Pro, which integrated a small LED strip around the rear camera module.

The Nothing Phone (1) seems to have the biggest impact. The first smartphone of nothing uses exactly LEDs as a differentiation element It covers the entire back of the terminal. Something Unihertz Luna has already emulated is what we describe as one of the rarest smartphones seen at MWC 2023, but whose recommendation is also appreciated.

Recently, there is also the case of Realme GT3, the global version of the Chinese Realme GT Neo 5. This device a small window with RGB light behind it. Another interesting proposal that could push other manufacturers to join in on the intention to modernize the notification LED.

Of course, it changes something from that LED of the past to what we see now. And this we can win in design but lose in comfort. And if you look, the three examples mentioned above fix the lights on the back, so it won’t help much if we usually keep the cell phone face down on a surface.
