Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced on Sunday the suspension of the truce agreed with the del Golfo clan, the country’s biggest criminal group, days after it was accused of violating the agreement.

The government and the criminal organization have agreed to a truce as part of the leftist president’s efforts to end an internal armed conflict that has lasted nearly six decades and claimed the lives of more than 450,000 people.

“I have ordered the Public Forces to resume all military operations against the del Golfo clan. The bilateral cessation of this illegal group has been suspended,” the ruler tweeted.

“We will not allow them to continue to sow dismay and terror in the communities.”

A few days ago, Peter accused the tribe of violating the truce by attacking an aqueduct in the midst of a miners’ protest who oppose military action against illegal gold mining by illegal armed groups.

The president wants Congress to pass legislation to prosecute gang leaders and members, including reduced prison terms, in exchange for them to turn in their weapons, confess to their crimes, and compensate victims.
