The growing pressure against the abuse of the dominant position or monopolies exercised by some corporations on their ecosystems has finally translated into legislation that will force them to open their arms. This is the case of the European Union’s Digital Markets Act/DMA, which Xbox will quite possibly be used to launch your own store for iOS and Android.

To top it all off, the European Union’s Digital Markets Act will force Apple and Google to open up iOS and Android to third-party stores starting in March 2024. Xbox boss Phil Spencer came in a few days ago. however, they show the division’s intentions to bring its own game store to the two main operating systems in the mobility sector We’ll see if the said store is eventually limited to games or goes furtherbecause there are aspects like the fee charged to developers that could open the door to competition.

Laws that would force Apple and Google to open up their ecosystems could be a great opportunity for Microsoft to resurrect itself in a sector that has generally defied it: mobility. The Redmond giant tried in the past to buy Nokia and push Windows Phone, but eventually succumbed after its bet didn’t work. This failure forced it to go through the hoops of Apple and Google, although it does not detract from the high demand for its services and products, such as Outlook and Microsoft Office, which also enjoy success on competing platforms.

Phil Spencer, head of Xbox

Existence of the Xbox Store for iOS and Android it would keep Microsoft in competition with Apple and Google from within, but at least it would have a chance to set its own terms instead of swallowing the demands and orders of her rivals. But while it can’t be ruled out that the envisioned Xbox store sells and distributes more than just video games, it’s also unlikely that Microsoft will pull its apps and services from the App Store and Play Store.

Although it doesn’t seem like it, the Activision-Blizzard acquisition could be important for the future Xbox business on iOS and Android, as the Redmond giant would take over titles like Call of Duty Mobile, Diablo Immortal and Candy Crush Saga. There is also the Game Pass service, whose dynamics are closely related to the purchases of companies that Microsoft has made in recent years.
