The gap between low-budget and big-budget filmmaking has just narrowed with the introduction of Miracle Studioa new AI-based tool that allows filmmakers to simply replace real actors with computer-generated characters.

The new tool was recently introduced by the founders Wonderful dynamics, Nikola Todorovic and Ty Sheridan, star of Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. The video below demonstrates the power of Wonder Studio, where an amateur filmmaker takes a human and replaces him with various computer-generated characters.

The video shows that Wonder Studio is as easy as dragging and dropping various CG characters onto real actors in the footage, and at the same time has more options for lighting, motion, grain, color and more. Todorovic explains that Wonder Studio has been in development for three years and is designed to automate the parts of the visuals that are needed but don’t affect the overall expression the artist intended.

It doesn’t stop what they are doing; automates 80-90% of the objective visual effects work and leaves them the subjective workTodorovic explained.The beauty of AI is that it makes something so complex simple.“

An example of this would be to manually animate a walking motion of a CGI character. Wonder Studio aims to automate the work, freeing up the VFX artists’ time to work on scenes that are more important to the story and more creative. Notably, Todorovic says Wonder Dynamics has created a tool that animates live footage frame by frame, eliminating the need for actors to use mockups. There are currently two ways to use CGI in films; paying actors for a mockup, or paying visual effects artists for time-consuming manual editing. Both are costly endeavors that make computer graphics a pipe dream for amateur filmmakers.

“We created something that automates this whole process, animating it live, frame by frame, no mockup needed. It automatically detects actors based on a single camera. Makes camera movement, lighting, color, completely replaces the actor with computer graphics.“, Todorovic explained.

The founder added that the technology is not trained by any of the previous artists, and that more experienced VFX artists will still have the basic elements to work with. In addition, Todorovic says Wonder Studio will allow VFX studios to take on more work as they will be able to significantly speed up the development process.

Wonder Dynamics plans to offer a free tier for software and professional paywall features that will be in demand by active users. The company will also have several paid plans. Wonder Studio is in beta but is already being used by big names in the industry like the Russo brothers, who are using the software for their upcoming Netflix movie with Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.

According to Todorovic, Wonder Studio is not replacing artists with artificial intelligence, but rather enhancing and empowering their work. He emphasizes that AI provides a huge opportunity to create more films and more voices. Wonder Dynamics hopes Wonder Studio can reduce the cost of the VFX process and allow more independent and amateur filmmakers to access high quality visual effects.
