This Monday (20) CEO Amazon, Andy Jassiannounced in a memo to employees that the company will lay off another 9,000 employees in the coming weeks. These cuts are in addition to previously announced layoffs that began in November and continued through January, covering more than 18,000 employees.
Following the announcement, Meta’s shares rose 4%.
The layoffs mainly affect the cloud computing, human resources, advertising and streaming sectors in twitch. According to Yassi, the decision to lay off more employees was made to reduce costs and in view of the economic situation and the uncertainty of the near future.
“A key premise of our annual plan for this year was cost reduction while heavily investing in long-term customer service, which we believe can greatly improve the lives of customers and Amazon as a whole.Jassy said.
Amazon is experiencing the biggest wave of layoffs in its history after massive hiring during the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, the company’s global workforce increased to over 1.6 million, up from 798,000 in the fourth quarter of 2019.
The company is also reviewing its expenses due to the slowdown in the growth of its core retail business. Amazon has suspended corporate hiring, halted some pilot projects and slowed down warehouse expansion.
Despite the layoffs, Yassy remains optimistic about the company’s “biggest business,” retail and Amazon Web Services, among other divisions in which the company continues to invest.
Tech giants such as Amazon, Facebook, Google and Microsoft are facing a crisis amid the Covid-19 pandemic and increased competition. Falling demand and a weakening economy have directly impacted the performance of companies that are trying to adjust to survive.
One of the measures taken by large technologies was the mass layoff of employees. Amazon was the latest to announce a wave of layoffs, joining other companies in the sector that have also been cutting jobs in recent months. The prospects for the future of these companies, which are trying to adapt to the new reality, are not yet clear.
