The Ukrainian Defense Ministry said on Monday that an explosion in Dzhankoy, in the northern Crimean peninsula, destroyed Russian Kalibr cruise missiles intended for use by Moscow’s Black Sea Fleet.
The shells, designed to be launched from surface ships of the Russian fleet, had a range of more than 2,500 kilometers on land and 375 kilometers at sea.
“An explosion in the temporarily occupied city of Dzhankoy in northern Crimea destroyed Russian Caliber-KN cruise missiles while they were being transported by rail,” the ministry’s main intelligence department said on social media.
Igor Ivin, the head of the Russian-established administration of Dzhankoy, said the city was attacked by drones and a 33-year-old man received shrapnel wounds from a downed drone but was hospitalized and is expected to survive.
The state news agency TASS, citing Ivin’s words on the Krym-24 TV channel, reported that a residential building, a school and a grocery store caught fire, and the power grid was damaged. (Reuters).
