Xu Guoli, 58, was sentenced to death in July 2021 for murder. The Hangzhou Intermediate People’s Court recalled on its official Wechat social media account today, adding that the evidence against Xu was “multiple and incontrovertible.”
Xu first reported the disappearance of his wife, Lai Huili, who was 51 years old at the time. He even went so far as to offer a reward of 100,000 yuan ($14,530). for clues that could clarify what happened, according to local media.
Police reviewed 6,000 hours of video footage taken by CCTV cameras near the couple’s Hangzhou home and 379 families interviewed who lived in six buildings of the residential complex without finding any trace of Lai.

Before the execution, the defendant was able to meet with some relativesreported by the judiciary, who did not provide details of the method used.
Chinese authorities do not provide official figures on the number of death row inmates, but in Amnesty International’s 2021 report on the death penalty, the organization noted that “China remains the world’s largest executioner”, although continues to treat execution data as state secrets and hinders their independent verification.
