They ‘postpone’ investigation of Benedict XVI for complicity in abuses

On Tuesday, the Munich prosecutor’s office announced that it had closed the investigation into the late Pope. Benedict XVI for possible complicity in abuses in the diocese of Munich and Freising in the absence of “sufficient suspicion” of criminal acts, which, if they had taken place, would have already been prescribed.

Chief Prosecutor Hans Kornprobst stressed that the investigation did not reveal “sufficient suspicions in the criminal actions of personnel officers” referring in particular to Josef Ratzinger, Archbishop of Munich and Freising between 1977 and 1982, his successor Cardinal Friedrich Wetter and then Vicar General Gerhard Gruber.

In November 2022, Benedict XVI was charged in a German court by a man who accused him of helped cover up historical abuses.

The complaint was filed last June on behalf of a man, then aged 38, who said that his was abused by a priest as a child.

The charge was brought against a priest identified as Peter H. and Ratzingerwho was Archbishop of Munich and Freising from 1977 to 1982, and his successor Cardinal Friedrich Vetterand another official of the Church.

In a January 2022 report on sexual harassment in the archdiocese between 1945 and 2019, Benedict is accused of not have measures taken against the clergy in four cases when he was Archbishop of Munich.

Benedict, who stepped down as pontiff in 2013, admitted that case management mistakes being in this position and apologized. His lawyers argued that he was not directly guilty.

The Pope Emeritus died on December 31, 2022. at the age of 95 years.
