The southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu is considering new rules to make factory shifts more flexible. Apple’s leading supplier, Foxconn Technology Group, operates India’s largest iPhone factory in this state.
Apple executives and the Cellular and Electronics Association of India, a lobbying group representing the US company and its suppliers, have been meeting with state government officials for six months to push for reform.
The planned changes will bring working hours in line with those at iPhone factories in China. The proposed changes will allow factories to operate in two 12-hour shifts instead of the previous three 8-hour shifts.
The new working conditions could encourage more women to work in factories, as more flexible shifts will help women avoid dangerous night journeys.
In addition, Apple and its suppliers are in talks to build large dormitories that will reduce commute times for working women in and around factory complexes.
The moves are part of Apple’s efforts to shift more production from China to other countries, including India.
As reported by Ukrinform, employees of the domestic political bloc of the administration of the President of the Russian Federation on Monday “advised” to give up the iPhone due to “security requirements”.
