Nvidia launches DGX Cloud with a platform to build its own generative AI

Nvidia proposes DGX Cloud. This is a cloud service that essentially gives you access to a supercomputer in the cloud through your browser. Nvidia wants everyone to be able to train AI models themselves.

Nvidia is introducing a cloud version of its own supercomputer architecture at GTC 2023: Nvidia DGX Cloud. DGX Cloud is a service that allows (large) companies to access a real AI supercomputer via their browser. This allows them to build and train complex AI models themselves.

The solution is based on Nvidia’s DGX architecture, which combines proprietary GPUs and connections with (Intel) processors into a powerful whole. Nvidia’s AI software stack runs on this hardware.

AI basics

Along with DGX Cloud, CEO Jensen Huang will also introduce Nvidia AI Foundations. Running on the cloud solution, this platform provides companies with a framework to create their own generative AI models. The solution consists of three main components:

  • NeMo is a framework for generative AI models based on text. Companies can train such a model themselves with their own data to arrive at their own variant of ChatGPT.
  • picasso is the most artistic pillar. With this framework, you can train AI that can generate images, videos, and even 3D models. Think a bit of Dall-E but with more options. This way you can train Picasso to construct really usable 3D models that you can then use in another program.
  • BioNeMo focuses on an important niche. The pharmaceutical industry in particular can use this to develop drugs, for example. For example, BioNeMo is great for training models that are good at it protein folding.

Nvidia AI Foundations comes with a number of pre-trained models of various sizes that companies can start with. You can also start from scratch.

No proprietary Nvidia cloud

The underlying cloud hardware is an Nvidia product, but the company won’t be offering DGX Cloud alone. The GPU specialist brings cloud supercomputers onto the market together with partners. The offering is available now on Oracle Cloud and Equinix. Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure will follow soon.

Nvidia also points out that DGX Cloud can also run locally if desired. Whether you choose on-premises, the cloud or a combination: management is always carried out via a single dashboard. Finally, customers who sign up for the solution get access to experts from Nvidia who can help with code optimization, among other things.
