Another important step in the fight against cancer: researchers from Biomedical Research Institute of Barcelona (IRB), in partnership with a Dutch biotech company Merusdiscovered an antibody that can attack cancer stem cells, which weakens the disease and prevents it from spreading to other organs – metastasis.

The first tests with a protein called petozemtalab (MSLA-158), which gave encouraging results, were performed in mice. For the following, scientists plan to use organoids, which are three-dimensional tissues derived from stem cells.

Researchers have a biobank of these organoids from colon cancer patients with the goal of evaluating the antibodies that can most help fight the disease.

According to Merus, three out of seven patients with head and neck cancer tested positive with shrinking tumors.

“Medicine of the future starts here,” Edward Buttle, an IRB researcher, said of the first results. “We hope that the antitumor activity indicated in the preliminary data will be confirmed.”

Plants can join the fight against disease

According to British researchers, there are already studies confirming the anti-cancer properties of elements of the natural world, such as plants.

Two subtypes of cancer that show promise in this case are ovarian cancer and breast cancer. According to Melanie-Jane Hauer, a researcher at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, one of the most prestigious in the world, yew, a rare gymnosperm, could provide powerful drugs in an easier and safer way.

“An effective anti-cancer drug called paclitaxel has been developed from the Pacific yew,” the scientist commented to the British edition of The Guardian. [ele] was based on a chemical whose yield is very small.”

Other ramifications of the disease such as Hodgkin’s lymphoma, melanoma and others also benefit from natural ingredients. Periwinkle rosea is responsible for the synthesis of vinblastine and vincristine, used in the treatment of these species.

Another study that is still ongoing is the work of Professor Short, who is analyzing the effectiveness of a cannabis-based drug against brain tumors, even in Brazil. Startup PHP Biotech is already trying to make triple-negative breast cancer treatments viable through the nation’s biodiversity.
