It took a while, but Adobe is also jumping on the AI ​​train. The company announces a “family of generative AI models” called Adobe Firefly.

At launch, Adobe will release two tools that use AI. A tool works like DALL-E where users can type in a command prompt to generate an image. The other tool generates stylized text and works like AI WordArt.

Adobe Firefly is currently only available as a beta through a website. Finally, Adobe plans to integrate generative AI tools into its creative apps like Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere.

“We are not afraid of change and we embrace it,” said Alexandru Costin, VP of Generative AI and Sensei at Adobe. “We’re building these capabilities right into products, so customers don’t need to know if they’re generative or not.”

Not trained in the work of “stolen” artists

Adobe is one of the few companies that discloses the data used to train its models. According to Adobe, the training content for the AI ​​only consists of images from the Adobe Stock library and not copyrighted works. If that’s true, Adobe – unlike other tools – won’t annoy artists.

To get the makers even more on its side, Adobe plans to pay them to provide training data as well. This isn’t the case at launch, but the company plans to develop a compensation strategy before the system comes out of beta.

Easier to use than other tools

Adobe wants to make its AI tools more user-friendly than the competition. Instead of entering long, complicated prompts to get a specific image, Adobe has built-in options for art styles, lighting, and aspect ratio. This looks like a more detailed version of what Canva already offers. To make it even easier, you can also apply different effects to an already created image.

Finally, Adobe also wants to build generative tools into its current apps. For example, Photoshop gets AI-generated outpaintings, Illustrator can generate vector variations from hand-drawn sketches, and Premiere lets you colorize or reframe an image with just one prompt. Adobe has not yet said when these features will be available.
