Research group from INTA (National Institute of Agricultural Technologies) and INTI (National Institute of Industrial Technologies) from Argentina Create a tool designed to know the environmental impact of the entire wheat-related production chain.

It provided life cycle analysis and involved all aspects and supplies, from field to shelf. This information will be available at the address QR codesAccording to new market and customer requirements.

“With the calculator, we give users the ability to generate a diagnosis, and because it is an open tool, they also have the ability to create alternative scenarios. Observe how the carbon footprint changes when evaluating these changes in parameters such as distance traveled, type of transport, procedures, inputs, etc. And energy used with others, ”said Leticia Tuninet, INTI’s Environmental Engineering Specialist, who is leading the project with INTA Environmental Footprint Platform Coordinator Rodolfo Bonjovan.

Carbon footprint is an indicator that lets you know the integrity of your greenhouse gases Greenhouse effect (Greenhouse gases) emitted (in quantitative CO2 emissions), Indirectly, by an individual, organization or event. In this particular case, the amount of greenhouse gases generated throughout the production chain is estimated.

This way you can know Impact on the environment Which has certain processes that open up the possibility of generating pollution reduction strategies. To this end, the Argentina Carbon Neutral Program (PACN) has invited specialists from INTA and INTI to develop a carbon footprint calculator for producers and consumers involved in the wheat value chain.

While INTA focused on the agricultural scene, INTI focused on the industrial scene. Together they fought the wheat production chain and analyzed the life cycle from field to port or customer.

The Carbon Footprint Calculator is a tool based on a series of drop-down tabs and standardized options. “So that it is a package for the end user, which can be a manufacturer, a mill or a factory, which allows to determine the impact on the environment,” – said Bongiovan.

The project arises from the PACN call

The calculator studies the environmental impact on 1 hectare of wheat cultivation, 1 ton of wheat grains at the field gate, stock exit and shipyard (FOB condition). Also 1 kg of wheat flour at the exit of the flour mill, at the port of the flour mill or at the client, as well as 1 kg of dry long pasta at the exit of the flour mill and at the port or customer. Dry pasta plant.

The tool is suitable for everyone who is a part of all the productive rings of this grain and its derivatives. Such as the production of flour and dry pasta. Manufacturers who wish to access this tool can request it for free through this link.

Just as this tool was developed to measure the impact of a wheat-producing climate, there are already other tools developed for corn, sorghum, and oilseeds. And one is in the process of processing dairy products.

Users accessing this tool will also have a calculator guide and other good environmental management practices to optimize the indicators that generate the most traces.

Once manufacturers have diagnosed their carbon footprint and identified the stages that remove the largest number of emissions, mitigation and / or compensation alternatives can be developed.

Eventually, the carbon footprint information generated by each product will be available via QR codes on the packaging.
