Thanks to a new partnership, fast casual customers will now be able to pay for their orders and earn loyalty points using just the palm of their hand.

To start using the system, customers need to link their subscription MyPanera to the account Amazon One. This eliminates the need to provide a phone number at the checkout, which has traditionally provided rewards available on the server. Palm scanning can be used to access loyalty rewards, pay, or both.
Panera is encouraged by the prospect of bringing Amazon One to stores, as the technology will allow the company to get to know its customers better. By identifying customers at the checkout, waiters will be able to recognize their names as well as their favorite orders, turning the guest experience into a real and meaningful relationship.

Amazon One launched in 2020 and has since expanded to a range of Whole Foods (owned by Amazon) and concert halls. The company also confirmed that it is now allowing customers to pre-register on Amazon One. Panera said Amazon One is already available at two locations in St. Louis but plans to expand it in the coming months.
While Amazon One’s palm-reading technology could replace credit cards and tickets, artists and activists have delayed their planned move to sports and music events, arguing that the technology could expose personal data to government agencies. However, Panera’s partnership with Amazon One represents big news in the world of payments and could signal a change in the way customers spend money.
