Tedros assured that the agreement will help to better protect people, regardless of whether they live in rich or poor countries.

As part of his response, Tedros shared a link to the WHO Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response Agreement.

Since the emergence of Covid-19 more than three years ago, the World Health Organization has complained about misinformation “infodemic” around the pandemic.

The UN agency has sometimes been the direct target of such attacks and has been accused by some commentators of trying to wrest health policy from governments, especially since international negotiations among Member States have begun on a new pandemic treaty to prevent and control future outbreaks.

The 194 Member States of the World Health Organization have agreed to start a global process for the development and negotiation of an international convention, agreement or other instrument in accordance with the Constitution of the World Health Organization. to strengthen pandemic prevention, preparedness and response.

According to the WHO, these international documents represent a commitment made by countries around the world meet the medical needs of its citizens to improve their health and strengthen the socio-economic situation of their communities as a whole.

If WHO Member States decide to do so, the agreement could cover the shortcomings identified by the Covid-19 pandemic, in particular the following key areas of action:

Global Preparedness and Response Agreements that help anticipate and prevent future pandemics and manage them more effectively when they occur;

Sustainable and predictable funding for preparedness and response to health emergencies, especially from national budgets, to support preparedness measures.

Will it affect the sovereignty of countries?

The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, assured that the treaty being discussed in the organization to combat future pandemics will not require countries to cede part of their sovereignty, as feared by some sectors.

WHO hopes that negotiations on a treaty or convention finish within a year and that the legal document could be signed at the general meeting of the organization to be held in May 2024.

An initial draft of a possible agreement was submitted in December 2022 and is currently being discussed by an intergovernmental commission that will at least nine rounds within twelve months.
