Data visualization is the art of letting data speak for itself. They convert unstructured chunks of data from various sources into bite-sized graphs or spreadsheets that anyone in the organization can use. The human brain is visually oriented, which means it absorbs and remembers visual information better.
Collecting, cleaning, analyzing and visualizing data can be very time consuming. Fortunately, you don’t have to do any of this manually. Data visualization software turns data into an easy-to-read chart in no time. You select the data you want to display, select a template and you’re done.
There are a variety of software packages that automate (parts of) the data processing process. Our editors wanted to find out which software is most commonly used by Belgian companies. We asked our readers about this in the form of an online survey. 193 participants completed the survey; After cleaning the data, 144 responses remained.
Microsoft BI takes the cake
It’s no big surprise that Microsoft BI is at the top. There are few software markets that Microsoft hasn’t penetrated, and data analytics is no exception. 44 percent of the participants rely on the BI platform from Microsoft. The first place is not stolen either, Forbes declares the software the best tool for business intelligence.
The additional advantage of Microsoft BI over the competition is its firm anchoring in the 365 ecosystem. This makes Microsoft BI a logical choice for companies already using Microsoft applications.
Tableau comes after Microsoft BI with 24 percent. The platform has specialized in data visualization for twenty years. The power of Tableau lies in the interaction between data and users. Since 2019, Tableau has lived under the Salesforce umbrella, which means that the platform integrates seamlessly with Salesforce’s CRM solutions and the business chat application Slack.
Niche providers like Qlik and Thoughtspot have to make do with crumbs. Qlik gets ten percent, Thoughtspot has to be content with just one percent. Qlik Sense is playing the artificial intelligence card to enable deeper interactions with the data, but the platform can’t count on a well-known ambassador like Salesforce and Microsoft to make it available to Belgian companies. This also applies to Thoughtspot, which nevertheless has the ambition to become “the Google of business intelligence”.
The remaining 21 percent goes to the rest category. This includes software tools such as Google Charts, Looker or Microsoft Excel, just to name a few. Participants who select this answer option may also not use any data visualization software at all.
Start with data visualization software
Even if you depend on the help of software, you should work carefully with data visualization. You can still create the most beautiful graphics, your visualization stands and falls with the quality of the displayed data. Discover our tips on how to turn data into concrete knowledge.
