Former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff (2011-2016) has been elected as the new President of the BRICS Development Bank, a forum that Brazil brings together with Russia, India, China and South Africa, with a mandate until 2025, the organization announced this Friday.

On March 24, 2023, the Board of Governors of the NBD (New Development Bank) unanimously elected Rousseff as the president of the bank with immediate effect.

Rousseff was nominated for the position by her political godfather and current Brazilian head of state, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has been in power since January 1.

The appointment comes ahead of a state visit to China, Brazil’s biggest trading partner, which Lula plans to make next week.

The Shanghai-based NBD was created in 2014 when Rousseff led the presidency of Brazil, which she succeeded Lulu in 2011 until Congress removed her from office in a political trial in 2016 on charges of alleged mismanagement of the budget.

Rousseff will replace Brazilian diplomat Marcos Prado Troyo at the head of the BRICS Development Bank, who took office in 2020 and whose term expired in 2025, who will now be supplemented by the former President of Brazil.

Prado Troijo, promoted by now former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, resigned from his post on March 10 as the financial institution began a new selection process.

According to Brazilian press reports, the diplomat now plans to join the regional government of Sao Paulo, headed by Bolsonaro Tarcisio Gómez de Freitas.

The BRICS Development Bank is financing infrastructure projects in its five member countries, but also supports developing countries such as Bangladesh, Egypt and Uruguay, which will become partners of the bank in 2021. EFE
